Parliament Prorogued

10:44 am Canadian Politics

Now that the uncertainty has diminished, things seem clearer.  One hopes that Harper will use the time to plot an effective strategy.  The next focal point will be the budget, which the Liberal-NDP-Bloc will have to vote against to overthrow the Conservatives.  If the opposition does not follow through by voting against the budget, without knowing its contents no less, then they will have blinked again and will never be taken seriously again.  Not that Dion is currently taken seriously.

The presented budget is likely to be all things to all people.  A high-spending, something-for-everyone , election-winning budget.  Voting against it will be (hopefully) electoral suicide.  Not voting against it will be political suicide.

Damn. I really wanted an election while the slimy behaviour of people like Layton was still fresh in everyone’s mind.

Here’s an idea, rather than trying to “plot an effective strategy”, why not spend the time trying to figure out how to govern effectively.

If all you care about is strategizing, then bugger off. I need better than that from my government.

Harper basically dissolved Parliament to save his job (Leader of the CPC) rather than his government. By taking this fight “to the people” and not working in the House with the opposition in any meaningful way, he’s guaranteed that the Conservative government will end, sooner rather than later.

Oh, and also, there will have to be a new Speech from the Throne, which the opposition can vote against as a matter of confidence. They don’t have to wait for the budget.
