After reading through a lot of the technical stuff in Klaus's speech, he does speak on behalf of the Czechs who want to be prosperous. They went through hard economic times after the iron curtain came down. The CO2 emissions in some of the East-Central European countries went down because many inefficient industries shut down. I gave you the example of the air seeming cleaner after 18 years. Mr. Klaus is a man who believes in the freedom to prosper. The problem in the EU is that there are very rich and very poor countries. Do poorer countries like the Czech Republic have the right to prosper without being hindered by EU regulations? Pne could take his case further by looking at the Kyoto Accord as an economic realignment agreement. Kyoto is not applied evenly to all countries. Developed and developing countries would have different rules applied to them in battling climate change. For Klaus, it doesn't mean that the Czechs will ignore the environment. They will adapt on their own terms.

A few weeks ago on the CBC's Nature of Things, David Suzuki and his daughter discused the wind turbine farms in Denmark. He did mention the reason why there are so many wind turbines is because of economics. The Danes do not wish to be dependent on Middle-Eastern or Russian oil in case there is a disruption in supply or if the costs of oil skyrockets. I do think in Canada that we should be doing the same in the long run. We need to be less dependent on oil. A few wind turbines and some solar panels could help cut our oil use. Even if it is only 2-4% at first, it is a start. Energy investment is like money investment: you don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Noted. Regardless, it is still pronounced Vaslav. Slavic languages always treat the letter "c" as the "s" sound, unlike Romance and Germanic languages.
Now, what about his points?

Actually, Vaclav is written in Czech, a Slavic but Latin scripted language with a few accented letters. Czech is not written in the Cyrillic script like Russian, Ukrainian, or Bulgarian.

The air in Prague does smell cleaner after 18 years. One does not see the blue haze that existed years ago.
