Global Hot Air

10:58 am ecology

The Dark Lord has sent out us this fascinating assemblage of facts and analysis pertaining to energy consumption, global warming, and related matters. It is written by Prof. David MacKay of the physics department of Cambridge University.

It is a book, freely available on the Internet, called “Sustainable Energy - Without the Hot Air”.  No one should be discussing energy policy without reference to it.

Of course he uses too many equations and he is something of a green, but that should only increase your respect for his factual inquiry.

I got as far as page 13 before I ran into an obvious error. About half of our CO2 production is being absorbed from the atmosphere, although he claims all our production remains in the atmosphere. On the next page he states that the earth hasn’t been 3 degrees warmer than the current temperature for the last three million years. Three degrees warmer is the estimated temperature of the holocene maximum just 8000 years ago. The last four interglacials are estimated to have been five degrees warmer. I think another revision is in order.

For a different perspective, see the attached, which refers to an important article on global warming.

’swift’ said “he claims all our production remains in the atmosphere”.
But he says no such thing!
Why lie about what he says? Indeed The book contains graphs showing the CO2 atmospheric residence curves.
