McCain: More Churchill than Reagan
February 15, 2008 2:41 pm American PoliticsA well-conceived comparison of John McCain and Winston Churchill in careers, strategic thinking and temperament. While the Greatest Briton remains in his own class, McCain could lend to our times some of the badly needed grit of the old bulldog himself.

It’s an intriguing comparison.
In particular, British Conservatives found Churchill much more palatable during war time, then did away with him almost immediately following the war.
McCain could find that the war, and the need to resolve that issue, may make his candidacy all the more potent.

When I read otherwise sensible people, such as David Warren, complain of McCain being “wet”, and Lawrence Auster and his ilk screaming abuse at McCain, it makes me think McCain might be on to something.
American politics is excessively dominated by the extremists of both parties, who tend to choose the candidates. Americans are far more middle of the road than the militatnts of their two political parties. I look forward to an Obama-versus-McCain showdown. The Democrats may be in the grip of a cult at the moment. I remember Trudeaumania, and what we got when our illusions fell away.
